Newfoundland Pony Registration

The NPS can assist you with the DNA testing, registration, or transfer of your Newfoundland Pony. Reissue of lost or misplaced NPS Registration Certificates can also be processed.

>>CLICK HERE to read more information on the registration of Ponies.

The Registrar accepts applications for registration of both full-blooded NL ponies and for Part-bred NL ponies. Please note that in either case you can apply for only one pony at a time. If you have more than one pony you simply repeat the process for each one. Only ponies that have registered sires and dams will qualify for full blooded NL pony registration.

Once the application has been accepted the Registrar will dispatch a DNA kit to the applicant. The DNA kit consists of a form and a bar code unique to your pony. You then send the kit with a hair specimen to the Maxxam laboratory in Ontario. The address of the lab, as well as all other relevant information is contained within the DNA kit.

Upon analysis of your samples, the lab will determine if your pony’s DNA matches that of the sire and dam named on the application form. When the outcome is positive, the Register will dispatch a Registration Certificate to you.

Note: Should you wish to register your pony via mail, run into any issues or have questions at any point, feel free to contact Kelly Power-Kean, the registrar for The Newfoundland Pony Society. She can be reached at this email address:

Before you begin

The first step in the registration form includes three (3) options for Registration Type. Please consider which option applies to you:

  • Register only – For owners who have already submitted a DNA kit and received confirmation that their pony qualifies for registration.
  • DNA test only – For owners who prefer to have their pony DNA tested BEFORE applying for full Registration.
  • DNA test AND register Pony – For owners who wish to register a Pony and are also applying for a DNA kit (Registration and Test Kit).

The registration of a Pony also requires the colors and markings of the Pony. For assistance with describing your pony for registration purposes, please CLICK HERE.  If you are unsure about your pony’s color or markings, please indicate this under the “Comments” at the bottom of your online application form.
